Pencil Drawings and Oil Painting Artist Will Huebner Portraits and Animals
I am a self-taught, independent , realism pencil drawings and oil paintings artist in Deerfield, New Hampshire. I began drawing portraits and animals in 2005 and the progression and development of my drawing technique is strongly evident in the many drawings I have produced. I enjoy portraits, figures, animals, and still lifes.
My purpose is non-commercial and my message is that anyone can be an artist if they are willing to try and not give up on the first few attempts. The purpose of early portraits and animals is to understand and learn from mistakes... not to produce an amazing work of art on the first day. It took me ten attempts before I had something that I was willing to show to someone else. Being an artist is less so being a gifted talent and more so being patient, persistent and practiced. I hope my experience in pencil drawings and oil painting will inspire you to give it a try and discover that you too can be an artist.
I look at my subject and I see varying tones, shapes, shades, textures and colors. It may look like a rabbit to you, but to me it is merely a collection of these elements. I generally do not make my pencil drawings up out of my own imagination. Rather I collect images and photos of portraits and animals that appeal to my artistic taste and draw what I see from these references creating my own version of something I have already admired. The Tiger above, for example, was drawn from a photo off the internet. It is not exact but it is very similar.
Clean crisp cool mountain air over a cold babbling brook that actually babbles as you walk along... telling the stories of centuries of others who have walk before me. A traditional New England with value for independence and freedom where neighbors look after neighbors and common decency is... well... common. But most of the value is not in people, but in the splendor of God's creation poured out across the mountains, rivers, and lakes. It is simply magical here in New Hampshire. A pencil drawings and oils painting artists paradise.
I am the son of a german immigrant who taught me that I can do just about anything in life if I am willing to try and not to give up after the first attempt. This advice has served me very well and I have been richly blessed by taking opportunities that The Lord puts in front of me. Being a pencil drawings Artist is an important but relatively minor part of my life experience. I have had many life experiences... much more so than the average person.
My two primary mediums are graphite pencils and oil paints. My pencil drawings were almost exclusively done on airplane flights between the USA and China as I traveled for business. I started with oils around the turn of the century and then moved to pencil drawing to try to become a better artist. I have moved back to oils in 2020 as I have been staying sequestered in my beautiful home forever.
I have always admired those who can create works of fine art. I was particularly inspired as a boy by Al Nolin, an artist in our neighborhood who fascinated me. Despite his near blindness, Mr. Nolin continued to make art with every medium he could lay his hands on. He was a simple man but when he picked up a piece of chalk, he became a magician.
I was also greatly inspired by my father who could bring building projects to life with simple pencil drawings on the back of a white paper plate... his favorite artist canvas. More than any other person, my dad made me who I am today. Now I take him with me everywhere I go.
I am not a "Student of Art" per se. I am quite ignorant about the arts in general but I know what I like to see in art and when I see it, I am mesmerized by it. Being an artist is really exploring one's self... understanding my own psyche and what I find beautiful in life. My pencil drawings reflect myself.
